about us

DiSclafani Designs is a diversified architectural and interior design firm, whose vice-president and University of Florida graduate Jessalyn L. DiSclafani, AIA has 19 years of architectural and construction experience in corporate office spaces, tenant improvements, healthcare, branch banks, medical offices, religious facilities and educational buildings including university scale projects.  We have worked with traditional Owner-Architect and design-build contract agreements, working hand-in-hand with the contractor, owner, and engineers regardless of the agreement type.

This stream-lined process has sharpened our talents for prioritizing monies, design, and schedule to achieve the owner’s goals.  In the end, it still is all about team, ethics and hard work.  We believe in doing the “Right thing”. The Architect as prime will be intimately involved with the owner, end user, programming, presentation and construction meetings.  The architect, Jessalyn L. DiSclafani will oversee the team and documents produced during each phase of the project.  It is critically important that our designs meet the unique requirements of the building occupants. We have had the pleasure of working with some fantastic clients, guiding them through conceptual ideas, design, fundraising, public presentations, permitting, AHCA reviews, bidding, contractor selection, construction, furnishings, fixtures and ultimately building occupation.

Religious

The history of architecture is concerned more with religious buildings than with any other type, because in most past cultures the universal and exalted appeal of religion made the church or temple the most expressive, the most permanent, and the most influential building in any community.  Sacred architecture (also known as religious architecture) is a religious architectural practice concerned with the design and construction of places of worship or sacred or intentional space, such as churches, mosques, stupas, synagogues, and temples.

First Baptist Church of Tampa

First Baptist Church of Tampa is a unique building located in downtown Tampa directly across from the University of Tampa.   Built-in 1923 and designed by an architect from New York, it is one of the very few buildings that have a basement in Tampa.

Renovating 90% of the entire building, we had to introduce contemporary concrete and steel with existing stone load-bearing walls, heavy timber structure, and a wood truss roof while required to meet today’s codes.

In addition, we installed a new electronic controlled HVAC system and electrical system.  New electrical service was designed and connected to the building by excavating under the parking lot and through the kitchen.   An additional structure was added to shore up the existing balcony, cantilevering above the 700-seat congregation below.  This structure became a jewel of Tampa when completed.

The congregation vacated the sanctuary for three years and worshiped in their gym while raising money for an asbestos abatement and the renovation itself.  It was well worth the wait because it is a beautiful sanctuary with the latest audio-visual system, digital lighting control system and two large screens on either side of the stage.  Also included were all-new finishes, pews, custom floral carpeting and new enlarged stage with a new baptistery for the whole congregation to see.

Cross Roads United Methodist Church

Cross Roads United Methodist is a new one story, 15,750 sf metal building structure located in Wesley Chapel, FL.  The church’s main priority was the services they provide to their congregation focusing on worship, youth classrooms, and fellowship.   As the architect and designer, our first focus was the phase one study of their land and the 50-year master plan.  The first building constructed:  Interim Sanctuary and education building.

 Building Program:

▪ 3,881sf Interim Sanctuary (also providing a basketball court, dining hall and performance stage)

▪ Main Lobby, 566 sf

▪ Administration (pastor office, workroom, toilet, and reception)

▪ Toilet rooms

▪ Full Commercial Kitchen

▪ 13 Classrooms, 400 sf with folding walls to create larger meeting rooms for youth ministries worship.

The cost was a major factor to the building committee as was accommodating the needs of their congregation.  We tried to meet all the goals of the client with the decision to use a metal building structure and siding to reduce project costs.

We used the materiality of split face block and brick to clad the exterior façade in all public areas.  This approach created the illusion of a richer building experience while giving the owner the durability of concrete and brick.  We also kept in mind the proportions of architectural elements as they relate to human scale through fenestration size, rhythm, roofing material, textures, and colors.

With the use of a bent beam structural system, we were able to achieve the long spans needed to accommodate a basketball court and a performance stage.

Harborside Christian Church

Harborside Christian Church was worshiping in a local high school auditorium, however, the pastor and congregation had a vision that Jessalyn L. DiSclafani (while with RBK Architects), helped them realize. They purchased land and needed help to get the vision out to the congregation.

We worked through preliminary sketches and 3-D models which helped them fundraise money and support to build a new facility of their own. During that time we worked with the building committee and kept refining the program. Jessalyn L. DiSclafani was responsible for all client meetings, design, permitting, building committee review meetings, bidding, and interior design including FF&E.

The Final design was a new 45,000 sf., two-story steel and concrete block building which housed:

  • Covered entrance/Drop off from the parking
  • Covered walkways adjacent to the lobby and interim sanctuary
  • Oversized entrance for greeting and fellowship.
  • First floor
  • Interim sanctuary, (serves as a basketball court and performance stage) 8,533 sf.
  • Main Lobby, 4,500 sf. with café, toilet rooms, and reception desk
  • 11 infant to 12yr.old classrooms—approx. 450 sf. each
  • Children’s Worship 1,790 sf.
  • Two stop elevator
  • Two large stairwells exiting directly to the exterior
  • Toilet rooms to accommodate 16 stalls with baby changing areas for men and women.
  • Second Floor
    • 9 Adult Classrooms approx. 500 sf.
    • 8 Youth Classrooms approx. 500 sf.

First United Methodist Church of Land O'Lakes

First United Methodist Church of Land O’Lakes, for many decades though world wars, changing economic environments and a population explosion, finally could build the educational building they needed for so long.

They constructed a single story, 7,418 sf concrete block and brick structure with a wood truss roof. It fit the scale of the surrounding landscape and adjacent church.  What made this project unique was its’ proximity to the sanctuary.  Placing the buildings so close together triggered code requirements with increased fire ratings. This was a requirement of the building committee and allowed the congregation to use the new restroom facilities.

The new classroom building housed:

·         9 classrooms

·         Infant Day Care Ministry during the week

·         Preschoolers Journey- Ages 3 and 4 years

·         Preschoolers Wee Church- Ages 3and 4 years

·         Elementary age Sunday

·         School, K- 5th graders,

·         Children’s Church-K- 5th graders

·         Choir practice room

·         Storage

·         2 Administration offices

·         Pastor’s Office

First Baptist Church of Plant City

First Baptist Church of Plant City, 3-story Education Building, and Daycare Addition

First Baptist Church of Plant City is a huge anchor in the downtown district of Plant City and was ready for a new educational facility in 2000.

Maximizing their downtown site which was landlocked in an urban setting left us with only one solution, building a 3-story classroom building for infants, children, youth, young adults, adults, women’s group and daycare during the week made total sense.  The internal connectivity with the sanctuary, kitchen and fellowship halls provided the level of security designed to give each member the safety and peace of mind to relax.

The inherent shape of the new building in relation to the existing created an enclosed playground with easy access for pick up and drop off in the parking lot.  The parking lot also provided enough stacking of cars on the covered sidewalk to protect the children and parents from the rain.  The 3-story building provided daycare at the first-floor level with:

■ 6 Classrooms, kiddy toilet rooms in each, cubbies and sink with the county for crafts.

■ 2 Offices,

■ Reception / security entrance,

■ Break room,

■ Utility/Electrical/Mechanical rooms,

■ 3 Stage elevator,

■ Laundry

■ Oversized halls

We enclosed a portion of the existing covered sidewalk and open-air stair to create the connection with the existing facility.  This connection had to maintain a 4-hour fire rated separation, with a concrete wall poured every cell with concrete.

Second Level:

■ 7 youth classrooms, four of which have collapsible walls to create one large fellowship room,

New ADA toilet rooms,

■ Third Level:

■ 8 adult classrooms, four of which have collapsible walls,

■ ADA toilet rooms,

■  Audio-visual storage.

■ Break room/cafe

Much, thought was given to the joint between the new structure elevations and the existing.  We certainly did not want to overpower the sanctuary and confuse people regarding the entrance and importance.  The floor to ceiling, arched glazing gives way to extensive views of downtown plant city.

New Construction 3 story Education and Day Care:

21,425 sf. Addition.

6 daycare classrooms – 1st Floor

15 classrooms – 2nd Floor

2 offices

Check-in

2 Break rooms

2 Stair towers

3 Stop elevator- electrical and mechanical

Responsibilities:
